The Tempest Bowl design shape favors almost no radiant heat transfer, without inhalation from the user.
I did a 50sec heating cycle with a fully loaded bowl, didn't draw/hit it, and let the Bowl screw into the Cap to cool down until room temp (~4 min);
Only some terps were missing and the material was still green with light yellow color on the bowl side.
Stock bowl mesh screens don't like a fine grind, 10mm diameter 100# SS mesh screens work better IMO.
For trad ha.h use, I like a 15mm diameter screen squeezed into a basket screen (see picture), as I can manage the basket screen depth easier.
Bowl mesh screen is easily adjustable, for a 0.7 to 0.15g capacity.
A half load in the full bowl position gives different results as a half load in the half bowl position, as it changes the heater proximity.
The small locking tabs for the titanium stem also help reduce heat transfer for other stems, by letting a tiny gap between the tabs and the stem.
The eight small holes on the side of the Bowl has two functions; to reduce heat transferred from the Cap to the Bowl, and prevent too much airflow restriction when loading/tamping.
After using, most of the heat of the Bowl ends near the fins area.
A little finger tamp is needed, to avoid any botanical falling on the Ball Retaining screen, and keeping the Bowl threads cleaned.
Loading and packing methods only change the airflow restriction.
However, the airflow restriction, the speed and length of inhalation and the heating method will change the extraction.
Botanical's quality and humidity level matters for the performance too.
As a convection heater, Restricted Direct Lung draws will give the optimal air stream for the best vapor production.
Mouth To Lung draws also work well, but big DL longer draws will tend to overheat the top of the load, especially without any stem airflow.
Stem airflow open, I can do big rips without charring the top, but the vapor is slightly less dense.
Bowl shape is longer than larger, so with the convection heat from the Cap, and a full bowl quickly heated, the AVB isn't as uniform as a conduction/hybrid design.
To get a uniform roast (with a full bowl packed fully), the user has to do a longer session, with a less aggressive, multiple heating and inhalations (joint session).
I love this bowl, it's one more reason to reach for the Tempest instead of other convection devices.
It can handle ground or nuggets, dry sift or trad h-sh, micro dose or larger loads.
Yes, it's not the best for extracting 0.15g in one heating/hit, but the best for everything else.
Stock Tempest configuration give me three optimal ways of extraction, with Mouth To Lung or Restricted Direct Lung draws:
-Half bowl one aggressive heating cycle, high temp extraction, better for consecutive fast/fresh bowls 320 to 360°C Wand timer
-Full bowl position not fully loaded, two gentle heating, easy control for low/medium temp extraction 200 to 300°C W" "
-Full bowl fully loaded, gentle multiple heating, temp stepping session extraction 200 to 320°C W" "
Some specs:
Tempest heater total length is 47mm, and 42mm when installed to a stem
Tempest Cap is 34mm length and 11g weight with 2.5mm zirconia balls
Tempest Cap is 12mm diameter at the Induction sleeve and 13.5mm at the widest
Tempest Bowl is 22mm length and 2.5g weight and has 8x 0.8mm side holes
Tempest Bowl is 11mm deep at full bowl and 10mm wide on the inside
There is about 2.5mm of space between the top of the Bowl and the Ball Retaining screen inside the Cap.
Every Tempest owner can benefit from a clean new bowl. When using my tempest head on a water pipe adaptor, I found that the bowl is the only bit that needs a clean... along with the glass wpa itself. The rest of the head and balls inside don't need as regular cleaning.. so I can now just quickly swap over to my spare bowl and wpa and it's as good as new
